The Xiaomi Mi6 is now officially available to pre-order on Chinese sites and hopefully to be released in the US in the next few months. It is the latest smartphone launched by Xiaomi with a spec list to challenge the high-rollers. Namely it boasts the Snapdragon 835 octa-core 64-bit processor–clocked at 2.45Ghz– and 6 GB of RAM (just for reference the new Samsung Galaxy S8 has the SD-835 and 4 GB of RAM.). The GPU is the exact same as the other 2017 flagships, the Adreno 540 and either 64GB or 128GB internal storage.
However in China, Xiaomi Mi 6 is introduced in two
variants – 6GB RAM with 64 GB internal storage and 6GB RAM with 128 GB internal storage which is priced at 2,499 Yuan ($360) and 2,899 Yuan($420) respectively. The company has also released the Mi 6 Ceramic Edition with 6GB RAM and 128 GB internal storage and with 18-karat gold camera rims which is priced at 2,999 Yuan($435). The Xiaomi Mi 6 comes with a four-sided 3D glass design and features a 5.1-inch Full HD (1080p) IPS LCD display . The Mi 6 has glass on the front and back with a stainless steel frame.
The smartphone runs Android 7.1.1 Nougat operating system with MIUI 8 on top of it. The fingerprint scanner is placed in the front under the glass. Xiaomi Mi 6 is also splash-resistant, with the SIM tray also sealed against splashes. The Mi 6 get its power from a 3350mAh battery which is coupled with optimizations which enable the Mi 6 to last up to a full day.
On the camera front, the Mi 6 comes with the dual camera set up two 12-megapixel rear cameras. One camera has a wide-angle lens with 4-axis Optical Image stabilization and another 12-megapixel telephoto camera for 2x lossless zoom. It has an 8-megapixel snapper for selfies and video calling. For connectivity, this smartphone supports 4G network with VOLTE and offers Dual SIM, dual speakers, WiFi (802.11 a/b/g/n), Bluetooth 4.2, NFC and USB-Type C. Xiaomi has ditched the 3.5 mm headphone jack on the Mi 6, something I think was unnecessary as the phone is a decent 7.5 mm thick.
Overall this device is an excellent “budget”smartphone, with solid specifications at about $400 -US. As always t
his device is directed towards the Asian countries and will be a tough buy in the US or Europe as a result of cellular band support and the competition.
